PN junction characteristics and Boltzmann's constant measurement






The instrument tests the relationship between PN junction forward voltage drop and temperature in constant forward current to verify the theory. The experiment groups electricity and heat into a comprehensive experiment. It can be used in physical experiment in colleges.

Experimental contents

1. Draw volt-ampere characteristics for relationship between forward voltage and forward current in the same temperature.

2. Measure boltzmann’s constant in different temperatures.

3. Map the relationship between PN junction forward voltage drop and temperature in constant forward current. Calculate sensitivity, estimate energy gap of the PN junction material tested.

4. Exploration: measure unknown temperature by given PN junction


a) Open sensing test design: The instrument provides several general thermowell to make convenience for inserting and fetching the sensor tested. It is used for not only in PN junction experiment but also in measuring the actual temperature and improving sensors in condition. It can measure thermistor, copper resistance, thermocouple, AD590, M35 and etc.

b) Dedicated accurate micro current source : We design a current source that can output 1NA~1mA steadily, it can guarantee the micro current steady to measure the forward voltage drop and boltzmann’s constant accurately.

c) The instrument can estimate the energy gap of 0 degree silicon material in normal temperature without ice water mixture
